Residential Garage Door Openers

Residential Garage Door Openers

Belt drive, chain drive and wall mount openers for residential garage doors, from LiftMaster, Linear and Nice. Complete openers with rails, and head units on their own for replacing a failed motor on an existing rail.

Belt or chain? A belt drive runs quietly and suits a garage under or beside a bedroom. A chain drive costs less and handles heavier doors. A wall mount bolts beside the door instead of hanging from the ceiling, which frees up overhead space for storage or a high-lift track.

Complete Openers — LiftMaster

Supplied with rail and hardware. Every model includes battery backup.

Model Drive Power Battery backup Best for
LiftMaster 6580L Belt 1 HPs DC Yes Standard single or double door where quiet matters
LiftMaster 6690L Belt 1-1/4 HPs DC Yes Heavier or insulated doors, still quiet
LiftMaster 4690L Chain Heavy duty DC Yes Heavy or oversized doors, detached garages
LiftMaster 98022 Wall mount DC Yes Freeing up ceiling space, high-lift and cathedral tracks
LiftMaster 98032 Wall mount Heavy duty DC Yes The largest and heaviest residential doors

Linear & Nice Head Units

These are head units only — no rail included. They replace the motor unit on an existing Linear installation and reuse your current rail, trolley and door arm. If you are starting from scratch or your rail is damaged, you want a complete LiftMaster opener from the table above instead.
Model Drive Smart Best for
Linear LDCO801 DC, 1/2 HP No Straight replacement for a failed LDCO800 or LDCO801 motor
Linear LDCO863B DC Yes Replacing an older Linear head unit and gaining phone control at the same time
Nice 661 DC Yes The current Nice-branded smart head unit — Nice now owns Linear

Why a head unit rather than a whole opener? If the rail, trolley and door arm are sound, replacing just the motor costs a good deal less and takes an hour instead of an afternoon. It also avoids re-drilling the header bracket and re-running the safety sensor wire.

Check the rail first. If it is bent, twisted or the trolley is worn, replace the lot — a new head unit on a tired rail will not last.

Which One Do I Need?

If you... Choose
Have a bedroom over or beside the garage A belt drive — the 6580L for a standard door, the 6690L for a heavy one
Have a heavy, wide or double-wide door The 4690L chain drive, or the 98032 wall mount
Want storage or a car lift overhead A wall mount — 98022 or 98032
Need the door to work in a power cut Any of the LiftMaster models above — all include battery backup
Have a working Linear rail and a dead motor A head unit — LDCO801, or LDCO863B / Nice 661 if you want phone control
Want to open the door from your phone Any LiftMaster with myQ, or the LDCO863B / Nice 661 on the Linear side
Just need a part for the opener you already have Garage door opener parts by model number
California and Washington buyers: battery backup is required by law on residential garage door openers. Every LiftMaster model on this page includes it. The Linear and Nice head units do not — check your local requirement before ordering one as a replacement.

Before You Order

Measure your door height. Complete openers ship with a 7 ft rail as standard. An 8 ft or 10 ft door needs an extension kit or a longer rail — tell us the height when you order and we will make sure the right rail goes in the box.

Check your headroom. A ceiling-mounted opener needs about 2 in. of clearance above the top of the door in its open position. If you have less, a wall mount is the answer.

Buying a head unit? Confirm your existing rail and trolley are in good condition first, and check the model number on your old motor so we can confirm the replacement matches.

Not sure? Call (866) 965-5599. We install these for a living and will tell you what fits.
