Ordering a battery, or the whole unit?
Most people searching for a "BBU battery" want this part. Linear supplies the BBU as a complete assembly — the battery is not sold separately, so when the backup stops holding charge you replace the unit rather than opening it up.
That is simpler than it sounds. Swap the unit, and the charging circuit is new along with the cells — which matters, because a backup that has been sitting flat for months often has a tired charger as well as a tired battery.

What the backup actually does
It is effectively a UPS for your garage door opener. When mains power fails, the BBU takes over and the door still opens and closes on the remote, the keypad and the wall control — no pulling the emergency release and heaving the door by hand in the dark.
On an attached garage that is the difference between getting the car out and not. Worth knowing that a backup which has quietly died gives no warning until the power goes off, which is exactly when you find out.
Fitting it
The BBU plugs into the operator and mounts in the same position as the old one. Allow the unit to charge fully before testing — a new backup out of the box is not at full capacity, and testing it immediately gives a misleading result.
Once charged, kill the mains at the breaker and cycle the door to confirm the backup is carrying it.

Can I just buy the battery? Linear does not sell the cells separately for this unit. Replacing the whole assembly gives you a fresh charging circuit as well, which is usually what you want on a unit that has been in service for years.

How long does a backup battery last? Typically three to five years, depending on how often it cycles and the temperature in the garage. Heat shortens it.
My opener is beeping. Most DC operators beep or show a battery indicator when the backup has failed. That is the operator telling you this part needs replacing.
Do I need one at all? Not to operate the door normally — but without it, a power cut means using the emergency release and lifting the door manually. On a heavy double door that is not a trivial job.
