Every BD Loops preformed loop part number works the same way: the letters give the loop style, the first number is the loop perimeter in feet, and the second is the lead-in length in feet. So SC 32-50 is a saw-cut loop with a 32 ft perimeter and a 50 ft lead-in run.
| Prefix | Style | Use |
|---|---|---|
| SC | Preformed saw-cut loop | Existing concrete or asphalt — installed in a 3/16 in groove and sealed |
| RL | Preformed direct burial loop | New pours, asphalt paving, gravel, or under pavers — 40 ft lead-in |
| EL | Preformed direct burial loop | Identical to RL, used when the lead-in run is longer than 40 ft |

What is the difference between RL and EL part numbers?
None in function — both are preformed direct burial loops. RL part numbers are used for loops with a 40 ft lead-in; EL part numbers are used when the lead-in run is longer than 40 ft.
Can I use a saw-cut loop for a direct burial application?
Both styles are rated for direct burial, but the direct burial loop has higher crush resistance and is the better choice for a bury. One exception: if you are installing under pavers on a concrete sub-base or slurry, use the saw-cut loop. Sandwiching wire between two hard surfaces will eventually fail.
What if my saw-cut pattern is not exact?
Any BD Loop can be made up to 4 ft smaller on site, either by trimming the dog-ear corners or by laying excess loop into the lead-in run. Cut slightly conservative and the loop will fit. You cannot make a preformed loop larger.
How many loops does my gate need?
A slide gate needs a minimum of two loops with an optional third. Single and double swing gates need a minimum of three with an optional fourth. Call us at (866) 965-5599 if you want help sizing a specific layout.
Do I need a loop detector as well?
Yes. A loop on its own does nothing — every loop circuit requires a detector to read it.
What sealant should I use?
BD-LS self-leveling sealant or BD-LG2 two-part polyurethane. Use a sealer, not a runny evaporation-cure crack filler.
Designed for installation under concrete, asphalt, gravel, or pavers, direct burial loops are ideal for new construction projects. These loops are built with durable, solid-core wire and eliminate air gaps that can cause false detections.
Perfect for retrofit installations, saw-cut loops are installed into a slot cut into existing concrete or asphalt and sealed for long-term durability. They feature protective outer jackets and pre-formed configurations for fast installation.
Complete your installation with loop sealants, saw blades, and testing tools. Shop BD-LS self-leveling sealant, BD-LG2 two-part loop goop, the BD-LG2-GUN dispensing gun, and loop saw blades for asphalt, concrete, and both surfaces.
Inductive loops detect metal objects such as cars and motorcycles, ensuring consistent performance without relying on pressure or magnetism. BD Loops products are trusted by gate installers and access control professionals for their durability, consistency, and ease of use.
