LiftMaster Solar Gate Operators

A solar gate opener is two things: a 12V DC operator and a solar charging kit sized to how much the gate runs. Every LiftMaster operator on this page is 12V DC and solar-ready, so you pick the operator for your gate first, then the panel and battery to match your daily cycles.

Solar suits gates with no mains power at the entrance — a long driveway, a field gate, a remote yard. Running a trench and conduit to the gate typically costs more than the whole solar kit. All of these operators also run on mains power if you have it.

Step 1 — Choose the Operator

Gate type Operator Capacity
Sliding gate RSL12UL Residential slide, 12V DC, battery backup included
Swing gate, single LA500PKGUL Residential linear swing, one leaf
Swing gate, double LA500PKGUL-Dual Residential linear swing, two leaves
Swing gate, heavier RSW12UL Residential swing, 12V DC, battery backup included

Step 2 — Size the Solar Kit

Pick by how many times the gate opens per day, not by gate size. More cycles means more battery.

Kit Battery Suits
20W7A 7 AH, 12V Light use — a handful of cycles a day, one household
20W33A 33 AH, 12V Regular use, or shaded and northern sites where charging is slower
Solar-3 64 watt panel High cycle counts, multiple daily users, or a heavy gate
When in doubt, size up. An undersized battery is the most common reason a solar gate stops working in winter — short days and cold both cut charging. The cost difference between the 7 AH and 33 AH kit is far less than a callout.

Common Questions

Will it work through winter? Yes, with the right kit. Short days and cold reduce charging, so size the battery for your worst month, not your best. In northern states or a shaded entrance, go to the 33 AH kit or the 64 watt panel.

What if the sun does not come out for a week? The battery carries the gate. A 33 AH battery holds several days of normal residential cycles with no charge at all.

Can I add solar to an operator I already own? Only if it is a 12V DC unit. A 120V AC operator cannot run from these kits. Check the operator's label or call us.

Does it need a battery even with a panel? Yes. The panel charges the battery; the battery runs the gate. A panel alone cannot open a gate at night.

Not Sure What You Need?

Tell us the gate type and weight, how far it travels, how many times a day it opens, and how much direct sun the entrance gets. Call (866) 965-5599 — we install these and will size the panel and battery properly rather than sell you a kit that fails in January.
