Electric Gate Locks & Maglocks

Electric Gate Locks and Magnetic Gate Locks

An electric gate lock holds a pedestrian or vehicle gate shut until your keypad, card reader, telephone entry system, remote receiver or gate operator tells it to release. GateHouse Supplies carries gate-rated locks from Securitron, Alarm Controls, RCI, SDC, Camden and CDVI, from 600 lb maglocks for walk gates up to the 2,000 lb Securitron GL1 for heavy gates, plus the Flex-Mount brackets that make post mounting simple.

How to Choose a Gate Lock

Fail safe or fail secure? A fail safe lock releases when power is cut; a fail secure (fail locked) lock stays locked. Magnetic locks are always fail safe. Check your local fire code: egress and pedestrian gates on an exit path usually need fail safe. Perimeter and storage gates often use fail secure, like the Securitron GL1-FL, with a key cylinder for manual override.

Maglock or electromechanical? A maglock has no moving parts, but it needs the armature to sit flat against the magnet. A gate that sags, binds or is pushed by wind can keep it from bonding. The Securitron GL1 electromechanical lock holds even with up to 100 lb of preload on the gate, and its receiver self-aligns 1/2 in. side to side.

Holding force. 600 lb suits light pedestrian gates. 1,200 lb is the standard for most vehicle and pedestrian gates. 2,000 lb (GL1) is for heavy gates or high-security perimeters.

Monitoring. A door position switch reports open or closed. A bond sensor or lock status output reports that the lock is actually holding. Choose a monitored model if your access control panel needs to alarm on a gate left unsecured.

Mounting. Gate posts rarely give you a flat header like a door. The Securitron FMK-SW (swing) and FMK-SL (slide) Flex-Mount kits fit the GL1 and M62FG on round posts up to 3 in., and FMB9-4 post shims adapt them to smaller posts.

Power and wiring. All of these locks run on 12 or 24VDC. You will also need a regulated power supply sized for the lock's current draw, and a relay or dry contact from your keypad, card reader, telephone entry system or gate operator to switch it. Use outdoor-rated cable in conduit; the gate conduit fittings on these locks are made for that.

Gate Lock FAQ

Can a maglock be used on an automatic gate? Yes. Wire the lock so the gate operator or access control system releases it before the gate starts to move. Most operator boards have an auxiliary or maglock output for this.

Will a maglock work on a sliding gate? Yes. The Alarm Controls WP series, RCI GateMag, SDC 1575/1576 and CDVI 8712FT are all rated for sliding and swinging gates. Use the FMK-SL kit for Securitron locks on slide gates.

What happens in a power outage? Fail safe locks release and the gate is unsecured. Fail secure locks stay locked, so add the GMC cylinder to a GL1-FL or GL1-FLM for key access. You can also back up the lock's power supply with batteries.
