The LiftMaster 98022 is an Elite Series wall mount garage door opener — also called a jackshaft or side mount opener. It bolts to the wall beside the door instead of hanging from the ceiling, which frees up the whole overhead span for storage, a car lift or a high-lift track.
This unit replaces the RJO3800, 8500 and 8500W — and unlike those, it no longer requires the cable tension monitor. One less component to fit and one less thing to fail.

Wall mount, jackshaft, side mount — same thing
All three describe an opener that mounts on the wall next to the torsion bar rather than on the ceiling. "Jackshaft" is the trade term, "wall mount" is LiftMaster's, and "side mount" is what most homeowners call it. If you have been searching any of those, this is the type of opener you want.

Why a wall mount instead of a ceiling opener
| Reason | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Overhead space | No motor, rail or hangers across the ceiling. Room for storage racks, a car lift, or a taller vehicle. |
| Low headroom | Ceiling openers need clearance above the open door. A wall mount does not, so it solves headroom problems outright. |
| High-lift and cathedral tracks | Track configurations a ceiling opener cannot follow |
| Noise | Nothing bolted to the ceiling means no vibration transmitted into the room above. The quietest option if there is a bedroom over the garage. |
| Heavy doors | Driving the torsion bar directly handles weight a trolley opener struggles with — 850 lb here |
A wall mount needs a torsion spring system. It drives the torsion bar, so it will not work on a door with extension springs along the horizontal tracks. If you are unsure which you have, look above the door opening — a torsion system has a bar with springs wound onto it. Send us a photo if you would rather we checked.
The automatic garage door lock
Included with this opener. It throws a deadbolt into the track when the door closes, so the door cannot be forced up from outside. On an attached garage that is a genuine security upgrade over a standard opener, and it is the feature most people do not realise is in the box.

Common questions
Is 98022 the same as 98022MC? Yes. 98022MC is the ordering part number — the MC suffix is how LiftMaster codes it for distribution. Same opener.
Will it replace my 8500? Yes. The 98022 replaces the 8500, 8500W and RJO3800, and it does not need the cable tension monitor those required.
What is a jackshaft opener? An opener that mounts on the wall beside the door and drives the torsion bar directly, rather than hanging from the ceiling and pulling the door along a rail. Wall mount, side mount and jackshaft all mean the same thing.
How heavy a door will it lift? Up to 850 lb.
Do I need a torsion spring door? Yes. A wall mount drives the torsion bar, so extension-spring doors are not compatible.
Does it have battery backup? Yes, integrated. That also satisfies the California and Washington requirement for battery backup on residential openers.
Does it work with myQ? Yes — built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, with alerts and remote control from the myQ app. Smartphone not included.
What is the warranty? Lifetime on the motor, 5 years on parts, 1 year on the battery and accessories.
Do I need the cable tension monitor? No. The older 8500 and 8500W did; this one does not.
