Sensing edges are custom made and are not returnable. When choosing your cord location, the reference is from the inside looking out — which side is the operator mounted on?

How Miller Edge sensing edges work

Miller Edge sensing edges are pressure-sensitive safety devices installed on the leading edge of a gate or door. When contact is made:

  • The edge compresses
  • Internal conductive elements make contact
  • A signal is sent to the operator
  • The system immediately stops and/or reverses

UL 325 Compliance

Modern automatic gates and doors are required to meet UL 325 safety standards and ASTM guidelines for entrapment protection. Miller Edge products are designed to help installers and property owners meet these requirements.

Monitored edges are required for UL 325 listed operators built after August 29, 2010 that have a monitored circuit. For gates, the cutoff is January 2016. For older units and most other applications, a non-monitored edge is used.

Types of Miller Edge sensing edges

Monitored Sensing Edges

Designed for newer gate and door operators, monitored edges continuously check for faults and confirm the safety device is functioning properly. The monitoring designator — T1 through T6 — is set by your operator, not by the edge. See the designator guide.

Non-Monitored Sensing Edges

Commonly used on older systems, these provide reliable obstruction detection without continuous monitoring.

Electric, Air-Wave and Pneumatic

  • Electric sensing edges use conductive strips inside the profile to trigger the signal
  • Air-Wave and pneumatic edges use air pressure to activate a switch, sold separately
