LiftMaster 61LM, 62LM, 63LM & 64LM Remotes

The 6xLM series is LiftMaster's dip switch generation at 390 MHz, fitted to openers built between 1984 and 1992. These are the oldest LiftMaster remotes still in regular service. Every original part number is discontinued — but the openers themselves often still run fine, and a current remote will operate one.

Holding a 61LM? The 893MAX replaces it. It is tri-band across 310, 315 and 390 MHz, so it covers this generation and any newer LiftMaster on the property at the same time.

Is this the right series for my opener?

Open your existing remote. If there is a row of nine tiny code switches inside, you are in the right place. Any one of these also confirms it:

Careful with "yellow". The yellow on a 1984–1992 opener is not the same as the bright yellow learn button on a modern Security+ 2.0 unit. If your opener was made after 2011 and has a yellow learn button, you want Security+ 2.0 remotes instead. The giveaway is the code switches: this generation has them, Security+ 2.0 does not.

The 811LMX is a commercial door remote. It works with commercial door receivers only and will not operate a residential garage door opener. If you have a garage door opener at home, use the remotes above.

Universal remotes

The 374UT and 380UT are being phased out. For this generation the 893MAX is the better answer — and a universal needs a working remote to learn from, which the 893MAX does not. Reach for a universal only when the property also runs another brand.

Programming

This generation is dip switch coded, not learn-button programmed. If you are fitting a like-for-like older remote, open the working one, note the position of all nine switches left to right, and set the new one to match.

A current remote such as the 893MAX works differently — it programs at the opener. Press the learn button on the motor unit, then press the remote button within 30 seconds. No switches to set.

Common questions

My 61LM stopped working — do I need a new opener? No. Change the battery first — these take a 12V 10A14, not the 3V cell used on newer remotes. If that does not fix it, the 893MAX works on the same opener.

What battery does a 61LM take? A 12V 10A14. This catches people out — the later LiftMaster remotes use a 3V coin cell.

Is the 61LM still made? No. Nothing in the 6xLM series is still produced.

My opener is from the 1980s. Is it worth keeping? If it runs quietly, reverses properly on an obstruction and the safety eyes work, a remote is far cheaper than a new opener. If it has no safety eyes at all, it predates the 1993 requirement and is worth replacing on safety grounds regardless of the remote.

Can I mix old and new remotes on one opener? Not on this generation. Dip switch remotes and learn-button remotes work differently — if you fit a 893MAX, program it at the opener and keep any surviving 61LM on its original switch setting.

The new remote programmed but the range is poor. Check the antenna wire hangs freely from the motor unit and is not coiled up or tucked away.
