LiftMaster 970LM, 971LM, 972LM, 973LM & 974LM Remotes

The 97xLM series is LiftMaster's 390 MHz Security+ generation, fitted to openers built between 1988 and April 2005. Most of these part numbers are now discontinued, but every one has a direct replacement that programs to the same opener. Find your old number below and order what replaces it.

Is this the right series for my opener?

Three ways to confirm, any one of which is enough:

Purple learn button instead? That is the 315 MHz generation — see the 37xLM series. Yellow? That is Security+ 2.0. The three formats do not cross over.

If you only need one button, the 971LM is still made and costs less than a three-button remote. Step up to the 893MAX when you need multiple buttons, or when one remote has to cover several openers on different frequencies — it is tri-band, so it handles orange, red, purple, green and yellow alike.

Universal remotes

The 374UT and 380UT are being phased out. For a red or orange learn button opener the 971LM or 893MAX is the better answer — and a universal needs a working remote to learn from, which the 893MAX does not. Use a universal only when the property runs non-LiftMaster equipment as well.

Programming a 390 MHz red or orange learn button remote

1. Find the learn button on the motor unit — usually beside the antenna wire, sometimes under the light lens.
2. Press and release it. The LED beside it comes on for about 30 seconds.
3. Within those 30 seconds, press the button on the new remote.
4. The opener light flashes or the unit clicks to confirm. Test the door.

To erase every remote from memory, press and hold the learn button until the LED goes out — around six seconds. That clears all of them, so reprogram every remote afterwards.

Common questions

My 971LM stopped working — do I need a new opener? No. Change the battery first. If that does not fix it, we still stock the genuine 971LM and it programs straight to the same opener.

What battery does a 971LM take? A 3V 10A20. Flat batteries are the most common cause of a remote that has "died".

Is the 973LM still made? No — the 893MAX replaces it, and being tri-band it also covers purple and yellow openers.

My opener was made after April 2005. Then it is probably not this series. Check the learn button colour — yellow means Security+ 2.0.

Can I mix old and new remotes on one opener? Yes, as long as they are all on the same frequency. A red or orange learn button opener will hold any mix of 390 MHz remotes.

The new remote programmed but the range is poor. Check the antenna wire hangs freely from the motor unit. In a metal building a 412HM coax receiver gets the antenna outside.
