Chamberlain 953D & 950D - Purple Learn Button

Chamberlain 953D & 950D — Purple Learn Button Remotes

The 953D and 950D are Chamberlain's 315 MHz remotes for openers with a purple learn button, built roughly between 2005 and 2011. The 953D is the three-button visor remote; the 950D and 950CD are single-button.

These are the same remotes LiftMaster sold as the 373LM and 371LM. Chamberlain owns LiftMaster and Craftsman, and the three brands share one radio platform — only the badge differs. If you find a 373LM cheaper than a 953D, it is the same remote.

Is my learn button purple?

It is on the motor unit, not the wall control — on the back or side, usually beside the antenna wire. If it is a different colour, order from the matching generation:

Programming

1. Press and release the purple learn button on the motor unit. The LED beside it comes on for about 30 seconds.
2. Within those 30 seconds, press the button on the new remote.
3. The opener light flashes or the unit clicks to confirm. Test the door.

To erase every remote from memory, press and hold the learn button until the LED goes out — around six seconds. That clears all of them, so reprogram every remote you want to keep.

Common questions

Is the 953D the same as the 373LM? Yes. Same remote, different brand badge. Chamberlain owns LiftMaster, and both run the same 315 MHz format.

What is the difference between 950D and 950CD? They are the same single-button remote; the suffix reflects packaging and market rather than function.

My remote stopped working. Change the battery first. It is the cause the overwhelming majority of the time.

Can I add a second remote? Yes. A purple learn button opener holds several remotes — program each one at the learn button.

It programmed but the range is poor. Check the antenna wire hangs freely from the motor unit and is not coiled up or tucked away.
