Find your model number first. It is on a label on the back or side of the motor unit, near the light lens, and almost always starts with 139.53 (for example 139.53914D or 139.53962SRT). Match the characters after 139.53 in the lists below — every model page has the exploded diagram and a full parts table with current part numbers. Kenmore garage door openers use the same 139. numbers and the same parts.

| Drive | How to tell | Rail parts |
|---|---|---|
| Chain | A metal chain runs the length of the rail. Most Craftsman 1/2 HP and 3/4 HP openers are chain drives. | Chain drive rail parts |
| Belt | A rubber belt in the rail; much quieter than a chain. Many belt models have battery backup. | Belt drive rail parts |
| Screw | A threaded steel rod turns inside the rail; no chain, no belt. Fewer moving parts, needs rail grease. | Screw drive rail parts |
The most common Craftsman opener. Chain in a T-rail. The 041C4220A gear-and-sprocket kit is the usual repair on the 1/2 HP models.
Rubber belt in the rail. Includes the DC battery-backup belt models such as 139.53914D, 139.53918D and 139.53939D.
A threaded steel rod in the rail instead of a chain or belt.
Motor runs, door does not move (chain drive). The gear and sprocket has stripped — the number-one failure on Craftsman chain drives. One kit, 041C4220A gear and sprocket (also sold as 41C4220 / 41A2827), fits most 1993-and-later 1/2 HP chain drive models. Confirm on your model page.
Door will not close and the opener light blinks. Safety sensor fault. The original 41A5034 / 041-0136 eyes are replaced by the current 041-0365-000 sensor eyes and brackets kit, which fits Craftsman openers made from 1997 on.
Belt is worn, slipping or snapped. Belts are sold by door height — 7 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft — on the belt drive rail parts page. Measure the door, not the rail.
Remote stopped working, or the old remote is discontinued. The 893MAX universal remote replaces the 139.53680, 139.53859 and 139.53879 Craftsman remotes and works with every Craftsman opener back to 1993. Keypads and more remotes are on the Craftsman remotes page.
Wall button is dead or discontinued. Openers built before 1998 take the 041C0494-2 control panel; 1998-and-newer openers take the 889LM. Both are on the wall controls and installation parts page.
Every Craftsman and Kenmore garage door opener was built for Sears by Chamberlain, which is why the model numbers start with 139 (the Sears source code for Chamberlain) and why the replacement parts carry Chamberlain/LiftMaster numbers such as 41A5434-11, 41C4220A and 041A5281-1. The same part may be printed with or without a leading zero — 41A2817 and 041A2817 are one part. Most Craftsman openers are chain drives, but the letter suffixes (D, DM, DS, SR, SRT) appear on chain, belt and screw models alike, so always go by the full model number rather than the suffix — the lists above are sorted by drive type for exactly that reason.
