Genuine LiftMaster 041C4220A gear and sprocket kit — also written 41C4220A, 41C4220 and, by its earlier number, 41A2827. The complete drive gear set for the AC chain drive garage door openers LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman have built since 1993: helical drive gear with retainer, worm gear, output shaft with sprocket, bearing plate, spring and thrust washers, retaining ring, roll pins and a packet of gear grease. When the motor runs but the chain does not move and there is white or brown plastic dust inside the cover, this is the kit.
AC chain drive only. This kit is for the 1/2 HP and 3/4 HP AC chain drives (models with a bulb socket and a capacitor on the motor). The DC openers (8160W, 8360W, 81602, 84602, 2420L and the belt drives) have no worm gear — their drive is the 041-0236-000 motor with travel module. Screw drives use the 041A2828 coupling and belt drives the 041C0589-2 gear and sprocket.

Is the gear kit the problem?
A worn gear is easy to confirm. Open the cover and look:
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| Motor runs, chain does not move, grinding noise | The gear kit — look for plastic shavings under the cover |
| Motor hums and does not turn | The capacitor first, then the motor; the gears are fine |
| Chain moves then stops, opener re-tries | The gear kit if the worm is worn, otherwise door balance and the force setting |
| Works, but very noisy | Grease the gears; if the helical gear teeth are rounded, the kit |
| Trolley slips on the rail | The trolley or the chain tension, not the gear |
Fitting
Unplug the opener and disconnect the chain at the trolley. Remove the cover, the light socket panel and the chain sprocket; drive out the roll pins and lift the old gears and shaft out. Fit the new worm gear and helical gear with a generous coat of the supplied grease, refit the shaft, sprocket and pins, and re-tension the chain. Replace the roll pins if they are loose — a loose pin will strip the new gear in a month. Re-learn the limits and force before leaving.
