LiftMaster Safety Sensor Eyes and Brackets

The safety sensors are the two eyes mounted near the bottom of the door track. If the door will not close, or closes a few inches and reverses, the sensors are the first thing to check — and most of the time nothing is broken.

Before you buy anything, check the lights.

  1. Both eyes lit and steady — the sensors are fine. The fault is elsewhere.
  2. One eye off or flickering — usually alignment. Loosen the wing nut, move the eye until the light is steady, retighten.
  3. One eye blinking steadily — the two eyes are not seeing each other. Check for a cobweb, a bin, a coiled hose, or sunlight hitting the receiving eye.
  4. Sunlight is the usual culprit in the afternoon — that is what the sunblocker bracket exists for.
  5. Neither eye lit — check the wire. Staples through the insulation are the most common cause; the 2 conductor bell wire is cheap to replace.
  6. Still blinking after all that — then replace the eyes, and replace them as a pair.

Which one do you need? If your brackets are sound and only the eyes have failed, an eye kit on its own is all you need — either the genuine 041-0136 or the cheaper aftermarket kit. If the brackets are bent, rusted or missing, the 041-0365-000 includes both and works out cheaper than buying them separately. All three fit LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman and Sears openers built from 1997 to current — you do not need to match your old part number.

Genuine or aftermarket? The genuine LiftMaster kit is the one to fit if the opener is under warranty, if it is a rental or a customer job, or if you simply want the factory part. The aftermarket kit is made by a third party, not by LiftMaster, and is there for a one-off repair on your own door where price matters more than the badge. Both are a matched sending and receiving pair.

If the door gets knocked regularly — a bike, a bin, a car door — the sensor guards cost less than one replacement eye kit and stop it happening again.

Sensor wire is low voltage two conductor bell wire. When you staple it, staple beside the wire rather than through it — a staple driven through the insulation shorts the pair and produces exactly the same blinking symptom as a failed eye.

4. Superseded Part Numbers

The current eyes and brackets replace every earlier version, so there is no need to match your old part number — order the current part from the tables above.

A Note on Safety

The safety sensors are a legal requirement on every residential garage door opener sold in the United States since 1993, and they are the only thing stopping the door closing on a child or a pet. Do not bypass them. Twisting the wires together to stop the beeping disables the reversing system entirely. If the sensors will not behave, replace them — a new eye kit costs a fraction of what the alternative could.
