TransCore AT5406 Access Control RFID Tag
The AT5406 is a half-frame, battery-powered dual-frequency RFID tag for automatic vehicle identification. It mounts inside the windshield and works with TransCore's Amtech brand readers and the EncomPass multiprotocol reader family.
The battery is the point. Where a passive sticker tag draws its power from the reader and reads at short range, the AT5406 transmits actively — so it is read further out, faster, and more reliably in conditions where a sticker struggles.
Battery tag or sticker tag?
This is the decision that matters, and the price difference is only part of it.

If your gate reads reliably with stickers, stay on stickers — they cost less and last indefinitely. Move to the AT5406 when the read range is not enough: a wide entrance, a reader that has to sit back from the lane, vehicles arriving at speed, or a gate where drivers keep having to stop and roll forward.
Non-metallised windshields only. The AT5406 is designed for interior mounting on a windshield with no metallic or heated coating. Many modern vehicles have one, and it will block the signal. Most have a small uncoated window behind the rear-view mirror — mount there. If the vehicle has no clear area at all, use an external or headlight tag instead.

Reader compatibility
The AT5406 works with TransCore Amtech brand readers and the EncomPass multiprotocol family. If you are adding tags to an existing installation, send us your reader model before you order — protocol mismatch is the most common reason tags arrive and do not work, and with a 25-unit minimum that is an expensive mistake to make.

Minimum order 25 units. Most of these go out to yards, fleets and communities rather than individuals. Tell us the vehicle count and your reader model and we will quote — and confirm current lead time before you commit, since availability varies.
Common questions
Why does this cost more than a sticker tag? It has a battery and transmits actively, so it reads at longer range. On a wide or fast entrance that is the difference between the gate opening as you approach and the driver having to stop.
How long does the battery last? Battery tags have a finite service life. Call us for the current rating on this tag — by comparison the AT5414 metal mount is specified at 8 years.
Can I move it between vehicles? Physically yes, unlike a sticker tag which is destroyed on removal. Whether you should is a policy question — a removable credential is a transferable one.
Will it read through my windshield? Only on non-metallised glass. Heated and metallic-coated windshields block the signal; mount in the uncoated window behind the mirror.
Will it work with my reader? Amtech brand and EncomPass multiprotocol readers. Send us the model and we will confirm before you order 25 of them.
What is the difference between the AT5406 and the AT5402? The AT5402 adds authentication that blocks cloning, spoofing and duplication. If preventing credential copying is the priority, that is the tag. If read range is the priority, this one.
