TransCore SmartPass4 RFID Reader — 10-4002-008

The SmartPass4 is a fully integrated, self-contained 915 MHz RFID reader with the antenna built in. One unit on a post or wall, no separate antenna to mount and align. TransCore builds it for high-performance parking, security access, electronic vehicle registration and traffic management.

This version reads the ATA protocol and outputs over RS232 or Wiegand, so it drops into standard access control panels.

ATA protocol only — read this before you order tags. This reader will not read eGo or eGo Plus sticker tags. If your site uses eGo Plus stickers, you need a reader that speaks eGo or SeGo — see the comparison below. Getting this wrong means a working reader and a box of tags it cannot see.

What else you need to make it work

The reader on its own does not open a gate. A complete installation needs these:

PartWhyRequired?
58-1620-001 5 ft cable Connects the reader. 20 ft version for longer runs. Yes
RT1850SL transformer 18 VAC, 50 VA power supply. MGT-1850P is the plug-in equivalent. Yes
A controller Takes the Wiegand output and decides who gets in — for example the DoorKing 1838-081. Any panel accepting Wiegand will work. Yes
ATA protocol tags The credentials themselves. Must be ATA — not eGo Plus. Yes
54-1620-001 bracket Wall mount bracket made for this reader If wall mounting

Call us before you order and we will spec the whole system in one go. A reader that arrives without its cable and transformer is a job that stalls on site, and that is the most common way these installations go wrong.

Which SmartPass4 or EncomPass4?

The reader has to speak the same protocol as your tags. This is the decision that matters.

ReaderProtocolsAntenna
10-4002-008 SmartPass4 — this reader ATA Internal — self-contained
10-4012-001 SmartPass4 External — use the AA3100 Yagi for a directional read zone
10-4002-024 EncomPass4 ATA, SeGo and 6C The flexible choice — reads mixed tag populations
10-4002-009 EncomPass4 eGo and ATA Reads eGo Plus sticker tags
10-4002-005 EncomPass4 6C and SeGo
10-4002-001 EncomPass4 SeGo only

If you are not certain which tags the site uses, or expect a mix, the 10-4002-024 reads all three protocols. On a community where residents have accumulated tags over years, that flexibility is usually worth the difference.

Internal or external antenna?

Internal — this reader — is one box. Simpler to install, fewer parts, no antenna alignment. The read pattern is fixed by where you mount the unit, so it suits a single lane with a straightforward approach.

External antenna versions let you place the antenna where the read zone needs to be and the electronics somewhere convenient. Use them for wide entrances, awkward geometry, or where you need a tight directional pattern to avoid reading a vehicle in the next lane.

Common questions

Will it read my eGo Plus sticker tags? No. This is an ATA-protocol reader. For eGo Plus stickers you need the 10-4002-009 or the multiprotocol 10-4002-024.

What do I need besides the reader? Cable, an 18 VAC transformer, a controller to take the Wiegand output, ATA tags, and a bracket if wall mounting. Full list above.

Does it need a separate antenna? No — the antenna is built in. That is what the "internal antenna" in the name means.

Will it work with my access control panel? If the panel accepts Wiegand, yes. That covers most systems including DoorKing, and it is the standard interface for this class of reader.

How far does it read? Range depends on the tag as much as the reader — a battery tag reads further than a passive sticker. Tell us the lane width, the approach speed and where the reader can physically go, and we will tell you whether this is the right unit.

Do you supply the whole system? Yes — reader, cable, transformer, bracket, controller and tags. Call and we will quote it as one package so nothing is missing on install day.
