The 8xLM series is LiftMaster's Billion Code generation at 390 MHz, fitted to openers built between 1993 and 1997. Every original part number in this series is now discontinued — but you do not need a new opener. Current remotes program to the same unit in about thirty seconds. Find your old number below.
Holding an 81LM or 83LM? The 893MAX replaces it. It is tri-band across 310, 315 and 390 MHz, so it covers your green learn button opener and any newer LiftMaster on the property at the same time.

The 8xLM series is the green generation. If yours is a different colour you need a different remote — the radio formats do not cross over.

Universal remotes
The 374UT and 380UT are being phased out. For a green learn button opener the 893MAX is the better answer — and a universal needs a working remote to learn from, which the 893MAX does not. Reach for a universal only when the property also runs another brand.

Programming a green learn button remote
1. Find the green learn button on the motor unit — usually beside the antenna wire, sometimes under the light lens.
2. Press and release it. The LED beside it comes on for about 30 seconds.
3. Within those 30 seconds, press the button on the new remote.
4. The opener light flashes or the unit clicks to confirm. Test the door.
To erase every remote from memory, press and hold the learn button until the LED goes out — around six seconds. That clears all of them, so reprogram every remote afterwards.
Common questions
My 81LM stopped working — do I need a new opener? No. Change the battery first. If that does not fix it, the 893MAX programs straight to the same opener.
What battery does an 81LM take? A 3V 10A20. Flat batteries are the most common cause of a remote that has "died".
Is the 81LM still made? No. Nothing in the 8xLM series is still produced. The 893MAX is the current equivalent and works on the same opener.
What is Billion Code? The rolling-code system LiftMaster used on this generation, before Security+ replaced it. Your opener still works fine — only the remote part numbers changed.
My opener is from the 1990s. Is it worth replacing the remote? Usually yes. A 1993–1997 opener in working order will keep going for years, and a remote costs a fraction of a new unit.
Can I mix old and new remotes on one opener? Yes, as long as they are all on the same frequency. A green learn button opener holds any mix of 390 MHz Billion Code remotes.
The new remote programmed but the range is poor. Check the antenna wire hangs freely from the motor unit and is not coiled up or tucked away.
