Is the board actually the problem?

Control boards are the most over-diagnosed part on any gate operator. Work through this before ordering — several of these faults look identical from the outside and cost a fraction of a board.

SymptomLikely cause
Gate dead, no response from anythingPower first — breaker, transformer, then the board
Opens but will not closeSafety loop or photo eye, not the board. Check those before ordering.
Runs one direction onlyLimit switches or the board. Check the limits first.
Remote does nothing but the keypad or wall control worksThe receiver, or a remote that needs reprogramming
Resets or reboots mid-cycleThe board, or a supply voltage problem feeding it
Motor hums but the gate does not moveCapacitor or drivetrain, not the board
Burnt smell, visible scorching or a bulged capacitor on the boardThe board, definitively
Erratic behaviour after a stormSurge damage — a very common cause of board failure on gates

Order by the number printed on the board, not by the model on the machine. Boards changed several times within the same model run, so two units with identical model numbers on the data plate can take different boards. Open the control box and read the number off the board itself.

After fitting

A replacement board arrives unprogrammed. You will need to reset the travel limits and force settings, reprogram every remote and transmitter, and re-enter any timer, loop or accessory settings before the gate works correctly.

Fit surge protection at the same time. Storm damage is the most common cause of gate operator board failure, and a board is the most expensive part in the box. If this one failed after a storm, the next one will too unless the installation is protected.

Common questions

Will this fit my unit? Check the number printed on your existing board against the part number above. If it matches, or matches one of the alternate numbers listed, it fits. If you cannot read it, send us a photo.

Do I have to reprogram the remotes? Yes. A new board has an empty radio memory. Reprogram every transmitter after fitting.

Do I need to reset the limits? Yes, travel limits and force settings after any board replacement. A gate running on default limits will overtravel.

Is this genuine? Yes, genuine OEM. Aftermarket boards exist for some models but firmware behaviour varies, and a control board is not the place to economise.

Can I fit it myself? Physically it is a few connectors and standoffs. The commissioning afterwards — limits, force, safety devices — is what needs care, and on a commercial or multi-family installation it needs to be done to UL325.

This replacement board is a great value. When you are using this gate controller, if your malfunction is that the gate will close and then immediately reopen and you are sure you have both AC power and good batteries, then it is the MAX8214BCPE chip on the board. It is usually cheaper to replace the board then to get it repaired. Good Luck, JMB
